Donatella grew up in Reggio di Calabria, Southern Italy, with her three siblings; her mother, Francesca, was a dressmaker, and her father, Antoni, was a salesman. Tina, her 12-year-old sister, died when she was nine from an untreated tetanus infection.

Donatella began learning knitwear design in Florence, Italy, in 1975, alongside Gianni, who went on to launch the Versace clothing line. Gianni created a perfume called “Blonde” specifically for Donatella in the 1980s as a thank you for being his muse.

Donatella inherited 20% of the Versace company when he was murdered on July 15, 1997. She is currently in charge of overseeing the production of numerous collections and has helped design advertising campaigns for Versace that have included celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga, among many others.

Donatella is also credited with designing the Palazzo Versace Dubai Hotel, which opened in November 2016.
