James Remar, the spouse of Atsuko, played a crucial role in Michael C. Hall’s murder drama Dexter on Showtime. It was understandable for the fans of the program to express their disbelief upon learning that James Remar would not be appearing in the Dexter revival. Jennifer Carpenter played the role of Atsuko’s spouse in the resurrection; as such, Carpenter will now be the voice inside Dexter’s head.

As a result, a lot of series watchers were left in shock and wondered why Remar was left out of the comeback. Then, in an interview in November 2021, showrunner Clyde Phillips responded.

James, not in the revival, as it turns out, is only the writer’s desire to attempt something different. Phillip stated that he would not be working with James in the same way as the other writers. He continued by saying that they had a fantastic chance to do it with Debra Morgan, played by Carpenter.

Phillip went on to say that while Debra plays the role of Dexter’s doubt, Harry is more of a—pun intended—father figure. He claimed that by arguing with her persona, Dexter feels far more at ease than if he were to simply listen to his inner voice. Phillip said that Deb’s abhorrence of Dexter’s murder contributes to the morally correct outcome of the narrative.

“Perhaps having her in his ear is exactly what he needs to keep him on a better path,” the showrunner surmised.

The company frequently claimed that it was because of “artistic differences” between director James Cameron and Atsuko’s spouse. However, the Cotton Club performer disclosed in “Sidebar” podcast episode #128 that he was sacked from the project after it was discovered he was using drugs.
