Relationship of Suzanne Kay with her late mother, Diahann Carroll

When she was still living, the Julia alum claimed in 2019 that she didn’t have a great relationship with her daughter, Suzanne, primarily due to how little involvement she made in her life.

Early in October 2019, the Golden Globe winner passed away from issues related to breast cancer. When Suzanne’s mother initially found the illness in the early 1990s, she was able to defeat it.

Heart failure claimed the life of Kay’s father, Monte, a record producer and agent for performers, in May 1988.

Before becoming a filmmaker, Suzanne worked at several news stations

In the middle of the 1970s, Suzanne Kay began her career as a writer and filmmaker by working as an intern for PBS NewsHour. After graduating from Columbia University, she did this.

Kay later worked as a news producer and writer for CNN in Atlanta after leaving PBS. She would later work for Essence Magazine as an art and entertainment editor. Soon after, she and co-hosts Greg Kinnear and Julie Morgan won the position of on-air co-anchors of ETVfirst !’s entertainment news program.

The daughter of the Dynasty actress, Suzanne, then worked in Hollywood as a TV scriptwriter for various FOX TV sitcoms. She also co-wrote the 2000 short film Hero at this time, and she founded Wonder View Films, a production firm.

She would thereafter spend the majority of the rest of her life working as a freelance screenwriter. Suzanne was concurrently employed by Harry Belafonte’s affiliated social justice organization Sankofa.org as a writing consultant.

She also created a documentary about Ed Sullivan, his efforts to combat racial injustice, and his desire to support Black artists. She collaborated on this with TV producer Precht Speciale.

Suzanne also contributed to a documentary on Diahann Carroll, her late mother. Additionally, she co-wrote and produced the feature picture Cape of Good Hope. Hero, the former couple’s joint project, required them to travel extensively for film premieres and even festivals. Additionally, the movie earned Suzanne’s ex-husband the 2001 Atom Films Director To Watch Award.

Suzanne and Mark also traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, during this. The ex-couple reportedly enjoyed their time in the nation so much that they considered relocating there with their children. Additionally, while living in South Africa, they wrote their first full-length feature film, Cape of Good Hope, which, as was already mentioned, received several accolades.

Parents of Suzanne Kay: Sidney Poitier was used in an affair by her mother

From 1956 to 1963, Suzanne’s parents, Monte Kay and Diahann Caroll were married. They reportedly wed without Diahann’s parents’ approval because they opposed the actress from Masked Saint and Monte’s union.

The first husband of Diahann was a casting director named Monte. They first connected at the House of Flowers auditions. After Diahann later had an affair with the late Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier, her marriage to Monte ended.

In her autobiography, the Eve’s Bayou actress acknowledged having an affair with Poitier. Poitier was married at the time to a different woman, with whom he had two children. The Porgy and Bess actor didn’t end his marriage, but Diahann finally deserted him for Poitier.

Following this, Caroll decided to mend fences with Monte, which they did for a period while also welcoming Suzanne. Nevertheless, Diahann and Suzanne’s father would call time on their relationship, and the former thereafter started dating Freddie Glassman.

Due to the failure of the relationship, Caroll, Suzanne’s mother, later wed Robert DeLeon, a journalist. After DeLeon’s passing in a car accident, this marriage also came to an end. Mom, an actress, and singer would remarry, this time to Vic Damone, a musician. He would be her final spouse.
