The classic English actor, writer, and novelist Dirk Bogarde made a stunning transition from matinée heartthrob to timeless emblem of edginess with hits like “Doctor in the House” (1954). Beyond his skill in film, Bogarde had a varied career.

Drawing on his work for The Daily Telegraph, he wrote six gripping novels, seven engrossing volumes of memoirs, and a collection of insightful journalism in a stunning second act. In a similar vein, his literary project demonstrated his wide range of skills and depth of knowledge.

Bogarde’s life took a brave turn during the Second World War. In addition, he served in the military for five years, rising to the rank of major and winning seven important medals. His moving poems from that period were included in war anthologies, and his artwork, which bears witness to his experiences throughout the war, is currently on display at esteemed establishments such as the Imperial War Museum and the British Museum.

Was Dirk Bogarde Gay?

Even though Dirk Bogarde never came out to the world while he was alive, he was a gay man. Actor Anthony Forwood, with whom he had been intimately involved for almost forty years, lived with him until he died in 1988. Even after homosexuality was made legal in England in 1967, Bogarde chose to conceal his sexual orientation.

Furthermore, he was afraid that admitting it would hurt both his personal and professional lives. In its day, Bogarde’s important part as a gay lawyer under blackmail in the 1961 movie “Victim” was revolutionary. This seminal work of cinema challenged social standards and portrayed homosexuality in a harsh yet compassionate light.

Bogarde’s career took a drastic swing at that juncture, moving from the world of heartthrob to complex and hard character roles. Bogarde never publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation, but his private life and his depictions of homosexual characters in movies had a profound impact on the representation of LGBTQ+ people in movies. His acting prowess and his little but significant contribution to increasing LGBTQ+ visibility in the business are both demonstrated by his legacy.

Dirk Bogarde’s Son Gareth And Partner Tony Forwood

The accomplished actor and writer Anthony Forwood was Dirk’s partner of over forty years. Their long-lasting bond started in 1949 and lasted until May 1988, when Forwood passed away. On October 14, 1945, they welcomed their son Gareth Forwood into the world. Together, they experienced the pleasures and difficulties of fatherhood as well as their own lives. Following in his parents’ footsteps, Gareth Forwood had a prosperous career in the entertainment business from 1964 until 2000, working in theater, cinema, and television.

His ability and commitment were a reflection of his family’s artistic heritage. With parts in movies like “Knights of the Round Table” (1953) and “The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men” (1952), in addition to appearances on the BBC Sunday-Night Theatre in 1950, Anthony Forwood made a significant impact on the world of film in his own right.

Anthony Forwood joined Dirk Bogarde as a life partner and assumed his manager responsibilities following their 1948 divorce from Glynis Johns, strengthening their relationship both personally and professionally. They left a long-lasting legacy in the entertainment industry together.
