Ms. Magill’s support, which had been dwindling in previous months as a result of her conduct at a Palestinian literary conference and the university’s early response to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, disintegrated after her testimony.

Prominent alumni questioned her leadership, wealthy benefactors withdrew their support, and government authorities encircled the school in an attempt to depose the president. Ms. Magill announced her departure on Saturday night, one day before Penn’s scheduled board meeting.

The chairman of the board, Scott L. Bok, informed the Penn community via email that Ms. Magill had “voluntarily tendered her resignation.” Mr. Bok quit less than an hour later, escalating the turmoil at one of the country’s most prominent universities.
