She is a multi-award-winning news anchor and a mainstay of GMA News and Public Affairs.

Following her graduation from De La Salle University, she rose to prominence as a news presenter on Philippine television.

She began her television career in September 1981 as the anchor of the newscast “Newscenter 4” and the host of the cultural program “Encore” on the state-run channel MBS.

Mel remained employed at the government station until the Marcos administration’s conclusion. After thereafter, she moved to ABS-CBN to assume the role of co-anchor for the network’s previous newscast, Balita Ngayon.

She became well-known for her work as one of the first anchors of TV Patrol, the top news show on ABS-CBN, which ran from 1987 until 1995.

Timeline of Relationships Alongside Jay Sonza

The theme of GMA-7 is the disagreement between Tiangco and Jay Sonza, a former co-host of Mel & Jay and ABS-CBN. Mel & Jay was an ABS-CBN program that aired from 1989 to 1996. It took sixteen years to complete the probe.

In March 2011, GMA-7 issued an official statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling to dismiss the cases that ABS-CBN had filed against Tiangco, Sonza, and the organization. Tiangco and Sonza once presented Mel & Jay, a Sunday TV show on ABS-CBN.

The Supreme Court decided that it was lawful for them to terminate their contract with ABS-CBN and that GMA-7 had no bearing on Mel and Jay’s decision to leave the network.

The statement added, “Since Mel and Jay had already rescinded their agreements with ABS-CBN when they transferred to GMA, there was no evidence that GMA had persuaded them to leave the network.”

This rule is adhered to throughout the media worldwide. Whether it is printed or broadcast, a newscaster is not allowed to endorse a product.

It is not allowed for him or her to use the credibility that comes with being a journalist to get sponsorships. This is the reason ABS-CBN suspended Tiangco, even though no one knows about it.

Mel’s punishment was to be suspended from her responsibilities as co-anchor of TV Patrol and the Mel & Jay radio show for three months without pay. However, she kept making Sunday appearances on Mel & Jay.

Afterward, Mel took an indefinite leave of absence from ABS-CBN and declined to tape the show, while Jay departed the network.
