Tony Hale’s Request for Martel Thompson to Get Married Was Inadvertently Dim

During a 2019 interview on Conan’s talk program, Tony discussed proposing marriage to his then-girlfriend Martel Thompson.

The actor from Arrested Development claimed that the play Stones in His Pockets served as the inspiration for his entire proposal. On their first date, the actor and his then-girlfriend watched this particular show.

Hale flew to the play’s setting in Ireland just to pop the question for the proposal. The ring in his pocket would strike a chord with the stone in the play, just as he had planned.

Fortunately, all of his preparations paid off, and Martel agreed to his suggestion. But after some time, Tony discovered that the play on which he had built his idea dealt with suicide and that the character in the play had drowned himself with the show’s stones.

He went on to say that he called his wife to find out whether she thought the proposal was strange after realizing the true meaning. He declared,

“After seeing the play, I called Martel and said, ‘Did you think it was strange that I took you to Ireland and we planned our engagement around the play ‘Stones on his Pockets?'” Yes, but I didn’t want to kill your momentum, she added. I couldn’t stop wondering, “Am I the stone that will suffocate your life and drag you to your death?”
