What Did Liz Magill Say?

“What Did Liz Magill Say?” people wonder. She resigned on Saturday, four days after speaking before Congress and avoiding the subject of whether or not students who pushed for the extermination of Jews should face punishment.

Ms. Magill’s support, which had been dwindling in previous months as a result of her conduct at a Palestinian literary conference and the university’s early response to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, disintegrated after her testimony.

Prominent alumni questioned her leadership, wealthy benefactors withdrew their support, and government authorities encircled the school in an attempt to depose the president. Ms. Magill announced her departure on Saturday night, one day before Penn’s scheduled board meeting.

The chairman of the board, Scott L. Bok, informed the Penn community via email that Ms. Magill had “voluntarily tendered her resignation.” Mr. Bok quit less than an hour later, escalating the turmoil at one of the country’s most prominent universities.

Liz Magill’s Controversy and Testimony

After testifying before a House committee, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill is facing harsh criticism and calls for her resignation. The Wharton Board of Advisors underscored the institution’s need for new leadership, citing a general lack of action in the aftermath of Magill’s address.

“As a result of the stated beliefs and collective failure to act,” the letter, which was written directly to Magill, added, “our Board respectfully suggests to you and the Board of Trustees that the University requires new leadership with immediate effect.” NFL owner Josh Harris and former Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky are among the Wharton Board’s important members.

The board sought immediate action, citing significant worry about a “dangerous and toxic culture” on campus. Regardless, the University of Pennsylvania’s Board of Trustees called an emergency meeting, sparking rumors about possible conversations over Magill’s future. Meanwhile, Magill’s future remains unknown, with contradictory reports emerging and a university official rejecting any immediate plans for a leadership transition.
