Leylah Annie Fernandez’s ethnicity has been highly debated since her victory on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. Furthermore, people are curious about her origins.

Fernandez put in an outstanding performance after a shaky start against Katerina Siniakova in Hong Kong. Fernandez was born on September 6, 2002, in Montreal, Canada, to parents Jorge and Irene. She is of mixed heritage and holds Canadian citizenship. Leylah Annie Fernandez is ranked 13th in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

On September 25, 2023, she was also ranked No. 18 in tennis doubles. Fernandez demonstrated early signs of brilliance. She reached the Australian Open girls’ singles final as a 16-year-old, losing to Clara Tauson. Leylah Annie was also the first Canadian girl since Eugenie Bouchard to win a junior Grand Slam title, and she was ranked world No. 1 in junior tennis

In 2021, she became the youngest player in WTA ever to win the Monterrey Open without dropping a set. Similarly, she successfully defended her Monterrey Open title in 2022, becoming a four-time finalist for the second time in her career.

Where Does Leylah Annie Fernandez’s Ethnicity Come From?

The ethnicity of Leylah Annie Fernandez has been heavily discussed on the internet. Jorge, her father, is Ecuadorian, and Irene, her mother, is Filipino Canadian. Jorge, her father, was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador. His family, however, relocated to Montreal when he was four years old in search of a better life. Jorge also obtained Canadian citizenship when he was 14 years old.

Jorge is a former soccer player who is now a tennis coach. Furthermore, despite never having played tennis before, he now teaches his daughters Leylah and Bianca. According to rumors, the former footballer trains his daughter’s tennis with his soccer skills.

Meanwhile, her mother, Irene, is a devoted supporter of her daughter. Her mother had to live and work in California for a few years to support the family. While little is known about her mother, Leylah claims she is a calming influence in contrast to her father’s more fiery personality.

The tennis player often recalls the terrible days when the family had to live apart. She also expressed gratitude to her parents for making significant sacrifices for her. Similarly, she believes that these sacrifices strengthened her and her family. Furthermore, she attributes her success to her parents, believing that it is the result of her parents’ hard work and sacrifices.

Father-Daughter Duo

Jorge has been extremely helpful in assisting Leylah in her tennis accomplishments. He has had a significant impact on his daughter’s outlook and work ethic even though he is not a tennis player. Jorge had no idea of his daughters becoming professional tennis players when he got them the racquets. However, when his daughters grew interested in the sport, Jorge was eager to help them.

Furthermore, Jorge and his wife recognized the difficulties their daughter would face when they enrolled Leylah in a development program in Montreal. She was kicked out of the program because of her poor forehand technique, sluggish fitness test, and inability to serve.

As a result, Jorge’s fatherly affection surfaced, prompting him to offer his assistance in coaching his daughter. His training sessions, on the other hand, frequently left Leylah in tears, and his teammates and coaches chastised him for his methods. Nonetheless, when asked about her father’s teaching methods, the Canadian tennis star stated, “He just wants me to improve, keep correcting, keep competing.”

Furthermore, the father of three never claimed to know tennis and instead sought the help of experienced instructors to improve his technical abilities. Furthermore, Jorge believes in decision-making autonomy and does not interfere with his daughter’s decision-making. Her father, according to Leylah, wants her to be a strong, independent lady who makes her own choices and learns to deal with the consequences.
