How Did Soccer Star Leigh Nicol Respond to Online Abuse Through a PornHub Video Leak?

When Nicol got a message on Instagram in 2019 from an unknown person claiming to have seen a video of her having sex, that’s when the horror started.

She first believed it to be a joke, but after receiving a link to the video from the guy, she understood it wasn’t.

Her iCloud account, which had been compromised by unidentified hackers, was where the footage was obtained from. It revealed Nicol, then eighteen, having sex with her former lover.

The video has received thousands of views since it was posted on Pornhub, one of the most popular pornographic websites worldwide. The breach of Nicol’s privacy left her feeling scared, embarrassed and abused.

When she contacted Pornhub to request that the video be taken down, she got only automatic answers that did not address her complaint.

When she called the police as well, they informed her that nothing could be done. The experience left Nicol with panic attacks, despair, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide.

She took a year off from soccer, lost weight, and experienced social isolation as a coping mechanism for the mental pain.

Updates on the Leigh Nicol phone hack scandal in 2023

Nicol decided to file a lawsuit in 2021 against Mindgeek, the parent company of Pornhub, for disseminating her film without permission.

She joined a group of four British women who claimed that Pornhub failed to safeguard them from danger and made money off of their exploitation in a lawsuit they filed in California.

In addition, the complaint said that Pornhub has a record of posting films of minors, rape victims, and ex-traffickers without confirming the individuals’ names or ages.

In addition to asking for an injunction to stop Pornhub from carrying out its unlawful activities, the complaint sought damages. The case was resolved out-of-court in 2023 for a sum of money that was not revealed.

While Nicol expressed relief that the legal dispute was resolved, she thought Pornhub ought to have taken more responsibility for its deeds.

Nicol expressed her want to utilize her knowledge to support other victims of cyberbullying and stop such incidents from occurring in the future.

She started serving as an ambassador for B5 Consulting, a company that advises and helps athletes stay safe online.

She also began presenting seminars and workshops on how to handle cyberbullying, sextortion, and online abuse to youth soccer players and other sports teams.

Nicol expressed her hope that by coming out, she would encourage others to defend their rights and take action against predators they encounter online.

She expressed her desire to change the world for the better and demonstrate that trauma can be overcome.
