North Carolina-born Kshamata Skeete, 49, was an excellent orthopedic surgeon and mountaineer in the United States.

She was a doctor of medicine with a focus on sports injuries and hand orthopedics.

Skeete provided care for athletes and other patients with bone, muscle, and joint ailments at Carolinas HealthCare System and Carolina Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center.

Skeete was an enthusiastic outdoor enthusiast who frequently went on climbing adventures in her personal life.

She was drawn to the excitement and allure of the world’s tallest peaks.

With a summit elevation of 6,960 meters above sea level, Aconcagua in Argentina is the tallest mountain peak in both the western and southern hemispheres, where she recently completed her last climbing expedition.

News About the Kshamata Skeete Accident: Was the Surgeon Killed?

After several exhausting days of hiking and climbing, Kshamata Skeete finally reached the peak of Aconcagua on January 24, 2023.

But tragedy befell her as she descended, in the Piedras Blancas region, some 5,500 meters above sea level, where she had a heart attack.

Gabriel Fraccia, her guide, reported the situation right away, but attempts at resuscitation were fruitless.

Skeete’s passing is the fourth climbing-related death on Aconcagua this season.

Her body was probably under tremendous strain due to the high altitude and strong gusts of above 100 km/h, which led to the deadly medical emergency.

The tragic loss of Skeete serves as a sobering reminder of the constant difficulties that climbers encounter atop the highest peaks in the globe.
