In McMinn County, Tennessee, 18-year-old Kelsey Burnette was raped and murdered. The family reported her missing on June 30 or July 1, 2017, during a gathering at an Etowah, Tennessee, home. A garbage bin in a forested area of downtown Etowah held her remains on July 4, 2017.

Kelsey Burnette was charged with first-degree criminal murder and rape in Joseph Wielzen’s trial. Wielzen was found guilty and sentenced to life without parole. Burnette’s parents characterized her as lovely, compassionate, and intellectual and discussed how her loss affected them.

Who killed Kelsey Burnette in Etowah?

The murder of Kelsey Burnette shook the Etowah community, leaving many wondering who killed her. Joseph Wielzen, convicted of raping and murdering Burnette in 2019, is spending life in prison. His counsel submitted a letter requesting a new trial, citing a judge-district attorney conflict of interest.

The defense argues Judge Wylie Richardson’s past legal relationship with District Attorney Steve Crump tainted the trial. They claim Judge Richardson should have recused himself because he was associated with state attorney Crump.

The defense also cites trial procedural and evidence disclosure concerns. The July 8 hearing will decide if Wielzen gets a second trial. The community wants answers about Kelsey Burnette’s murder and closure for her family as the judicial process progresses.
