KHJ-TV in Los Angeles was attempting to resurrect Fright Night, a weekly horror program hosted by Sinister Seymour (later Larry Vincent) in 1981. Elvira, Peterson’s alter ego, was born when she auditioned for the horror presenter role. She immediately became a celebrity associated with Halloween.

Prior to her TV appearance, Peterson worked as a drag queen in a club. “I always tell people that I was raised by a group of crazy drag queens,” she told the San Francisco Bay Guardian. “When I was younger, I was surrounded by so many drag queens… Mr. Bobby and Tawny forced me to dress up… and then we’d perform The Supremes.”

Before she debuted on our TV screens in a black, cleavage-baring gown with a dark wig and a snarky sense of humor, Peterson was a Las Vegas showgirl.

Elvira Peterson has hosted numerous horror and Halloween shows. She’s also appeared in comic novels and video games. She has appeared in a number of movies, including Scooby-Doo Return to Zombie Island. Peterson has almost 80 credits as an actor, both in and out of her legendary role. In 2016, Peterson released a book named Elvira’s 35th Anniversary “coffin table.”Her current net worth is believed to be $3.5 million.
