He started working at the bakery run by his family when he was nine years old. Later, because he didn’t like working there, he got into arguments with his father and started smoking and taking drugs.

He received his first prison sentence in 1987 for breaking into a home. In 1989, after accepting a job offer from his brother Glenn, he went back to his father’s company, the family bakery, before quitting once more and relocating to Massachusetts. For this particularly armed robbery, he served more time in prison. He was later detained once more in Portland, Oregon, in 1997.

Later in life, he was enrolled in both an honor drug rehabilitation program and a vocational training program (in computer-aided drafting and design). After succeeding in this course, he started instructing other convicts. On December 27, 2004, he was allowed to leave prison, and for the third time, he worked with his brother in the family bakery.

He and his brother developed the concept for Dave’s Killer Bread, a loaf with a cornmeal crust while working at the bakery. As a result of the product’s success in the neighborhood farmer’s market, more stores started carrying it. The business has 300 employees total at its Milwaukee, Oregon, headquarters by 2013. Flowers Foods paid over USD 275 million to acquire the business in August 2015.

Dave established the Discover African Art organization in 2016. For this company in Clackamas, Oregon, he opened a flagship showroom and a boutique in Portland’s Pearl District. The company contributed to grain shipments in June 2017 that were going to a community in Mali.

Late in 2013, Dave’s female friend Harsh called the police to report that he was experiencing a mental health crisis. He clashed with the officers when they arrived, and they both arrested him and sent three of them to the hospital. His bipolar disorder was identified in October 2014, and he was found guilty. He was released in January 2015 with restrictions, including driving and bar visits, that were overseen by the board.
