Since Anna Matthews spent ten years as the church administrator at St. Bene’t’s in the center of Cambridge, many are looking for information about her suicide.

From 2012 to 2019, she served as the diocese’s director of ordinands. Before completing her priestly training at Westcott House, she finished her theology studies at Cambridge’s Robinson College.

After being ordained in 2003, Anna finished her curacy at St. Lawrence’s in Abbots Langley and spent six years serving as the canon precentor at St. Albans Cathedral.

The spiritual leader of Canon Matthews, Canon On Sunday, March 12, Dean Mark Oakley of St. John’s College in Cambridge gave a sermon at the 10 a.m. eucharist in St. Bene’t’s.

He continually emphasized the seriousness of their job, refusing to let the irony and snark that they all too often indulge in overshadow the enormous honor and responsibility of our profession. Canon Matthews was described by him as a priest’s priest.

Canon On Thursday, Kevin Walton described the news as “devastating”. She dedicated her all to this area and its people, as much as it loved her and still does.

Corpus Christi College in Cambridge is in charge of running St. Bene’t’s. The Rev. Dr. Andrew Davison, the Dean of Corpus Christi and a lifelong friend of Canon Matthews, described her as the quintessential all-rounder on Thursday.

She was a gifted preacher and a very gifted pastor. She was incredibly intelligent and organized. And an excellent cook.
