Ijeoma Ukenta and Abigail Elphick—later dubbed “Victoria’s Secret Karen”—were implicated in this event. She was trying to use a voucher to get free underwear.

The video depicted an argument that swiftly got out of hand and resulted in Ms. Elphick losing it. Widespread social media sharing of the recording ensued.

Outrage was generated over the occurrence, however, fresh information has emerged from court documents. It exposed a convoluted network of underlying causes for the viral video and the events that followed.

When Abigail Elphick and Ijeoma Ukenta met paths during a seemingly ordinary summer 2021 shopping excursion at Victoria’s Secret in the Short Hills Mall, things took an unexpected turn.

The event gained widespread attention after being documented on camera and extensively disseminated on social media.

It started when Elphick, a white lady, kindly asked Ukenta, a black woman, to give her some space in accordance with COVID-19 social distance standards. Then things escalated quickly, with Elphick slapping Ukenta, hurling goods, and finally falling to the ground in pain.

Nearly two years after the event, Ijeoma Ukenta, the lady who took the now-famous video, filed a civil case. In addition to Abigail Elphick, Victoria’s Secret, the mall, and its security firm are also named in her case.

In her complaint, Ukenta accuses them of being careless, saying they ignored her and spoke slowly to her.

It was also alleged that they did not provide her with the victim protection and support that she required. This court dispute is unique, however, because of Abigail Elphick’s unexpected defense strategy.

Elphick has a history of mental and physical illnesses, it has been disclosed. Her legal team contends that the breakdown was brought on by her mental disorder.

Elphick’s main worry during the event, according to her defense, was that she would lose her job and her house as a result of the film of her acts.
